SPIRIT FIRE GUIDELINES

Above All: Do No Harm

Spirit Fire guidelines have been established to ensure all who attend are safe. These guidelines govern our events, including this broadcast and its sessions. If you participate with us online, or offer programs locally, we ask you to read and follow these guidelines to extend true safety for all, not some, attendees.

  1. Create a sacred place. Every attendee - survivor and clergy - should receive the same consideration, respect and charity.
  2. Assume good intent. Suspend judgment. Do not personalize what is addressed to you.
  3. Listen to hear not to respond. Receive what you hear prayerfully without reaction.
  4. Seek dialogue. Listen. Absorb. Reflect. Respond for yourself. Respect the other view. Avoid debate and alliances.
  5. Welcome mistakes with honest correction in kindness and not judgment or criticism.
  6. Speak only for yourself. Use “I” statements. Share your experience and views, not those of persons not present.
  7. Honor boundaries. Do not reveal facts about third parties. Do not ask personal questions of speakers.
  8. Ask questions, when appropriate, to clarify and not challenge another point of view. Do not use questions to challenge.
  9. Encounter attendees as individuals. Mental illness is a diagnosis not an identity; do not dismiss what others say because of their reaction. No one is a scapegoat for institutional or family failures.
  10. Share time. Do not dominate. Private time aside with a counselor can address personal needs and preserve the group process. Refrain at all times sharing details of abuse and other violence.
  11. Empower others by not solving problems or offering advice during discussions or breaks.
  12. Empower yourself. Be mindful of your feelings and reactions. Do they signal a need for you? Ask for help from your support network.
  13. Remember the power of pain. Abide by these guidelines to protect all participants from triggers, re-wounding, and vicarious wounds.
  14. Honor group guidelines. Any member in an active discussion in-person or on teleconference may ask for a “time out” at any time, which will also permit the group or facilitator assess dynamics.
  15. Maintain confidentiality and anonymity for all  participants without exception. It is prohibited to reveal names or what  others say expect as the group may unanimously agree at the outset.

Non-Alignment

Non-Alignment

We are all Christians. Most of us are practicing Catholics. We are not paid or in the employ of the Church to present this broadcast series. Many of our sponsors are Catholic groups, but none have editorial input or advance approval on the programming. In accordance with content industry protocols, each guest has the option to preview his or her recorded presentation or interview prior release.

Notwithstanding the above paragraph, we are not aligned with any religious, ideological, or political point of view. We do not engage in controversies. We do not endorse or oppose any cause. Before participating in our events, people agree to be similarly not aligned for the duration of their participation; e.g., not mentioning topics such as liturgical rites or political figures.
